Introducing Lean Software Development
Frode L. Ødegård
Wednesday, August 4, 2004 Networking @ 5:45; Business @ 6:45; Program @ 7:00 PM
Countrywide, 2900 Madera, Simi Valley, CA 93065
Lean Product Development originated at Toyota, which designs new products up to four times faster than its competitors, while maintaining superior quality standards. In this lecture we will discuss how Lean Enterprise principles can be applied to software development. In contrast with traditional approaches to improve the software development process, Lean involves a radical reorganization of how work is performed. Lean companies move quickly to dramatically simplify and speed up processes, leverage architecture design choices, and link horizontal teams to overcome internal and external boundaries. You will learn how to:
· Achieve significant reductions in cost and cycle time
· Improve quality by reducing defect opportunities
· Help your teams focus on value and remove waste
· Work with suppliers and customers for mutual benefit
· Organize teams around "value streams" to overcome internal boundaries
· Integrate the design of architectures, processes, and teams
· Deliver functionality needed by your customer on a just-in-time basis
· Design cultural values and team rewards for successful Lean implementation
· Apply these ideas no matter how much/how little you are using outsourcing
About the Speaker
Frode L. Ødegård is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Ødegård Labs, Inc. as well as the Lean Software Institute. He is a frequent public speaker on software engineering management. Frode's lecture topics have included defect prevention, optimizing software development for profitability, architecture, outsourcing practices, and the relationship between leadership, quality, and specifications. He is the author of a forthcoming book on lean software development.

The newest security-related publication issued by ISACA’s affiliated IT Governance Institute, "COBIT Security Baseline", is now available for complimentary download by ISACA members. This ISACA document is useful in understanding the 39-step COBIT security baseline, as a comprehensive approach to better information security. "COBIT Security Baseline" is based on Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT), issued by the IT Governance Institute and now in its third edition. COBIT covers security in addition to other risks that can occur with the use of IT. A mapping to related control objectives in ISO 17799 is included as well. For further information: www.isaca.org
