The Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMI) provides a collection of industry best practices for software and systems engineering and management. This presentation discusses the role of the quality assurance specialist in implementing the CMMI practices. As an organization matures, the value of QA changes, and the QA specialist's role and skills must evolve to keep pace. A brief overview of the model will be given, followed by an in-depth examination of the CMMI QA requirements across all maturity levels. Contrast with traditional QA activities will be discussed.

Software architecture is a distinct and developing discipline in the software profession. Many practitioners have apparently entered the field with little effort; adding the word "architect" to a title is easy to do. However, beneath the surface appearance, distinct approaches and toolsets are required to succeed. Reports of IT overspending and project failures emphasize the fact that these skills must be leveraged and developed.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has estimated the cost of an inadequate infrastructure for software testing to range from $22.2 to $59.5 billion per year. Despite of this fact, proving the benefits and costs of quality is a challenge for every Quality Control (QC) manager. Why? Because sometimes even experienced managers think quality should be free or it is too costly and it is not worthwhile.

Lean Product Development originated at Toyota, which designs new products up to four times faster than its competitors, while maintaining superior quality standards. In this lecture we will discuss how Lean Enterprise principles can be applied to software development. In contrast with traditional approaches to improve the software development process, Lean involves a radical reorganization of how work is performed. Lean companies move quickly to dramatically simplify and speed up processes, leverage architecture design choices, and link horizontal teams to overcome internal and external boundaries. You will learn how to:

Recently, the free and open-source software movement has garnered a great deal of attention in both public- and private-sector organizations. This talk will provide an overview of major client-side and server-side open source software products and the key processes that are used in their development. This talk will also discuss some possible linkages between the "openness" of software source code and the resulting process quality within an organization and the resulting product quality of software deliverables.
